The Persian language entered the Indian subcontinent during the Ghaznavid era (5th Hijri century) with Sultan Mahmud's invasions and became the official, administrative, scientific, and literary language under the Seljuks, Ghorids, and especially the Mughals. During the Mughal period, it dominated politics, culture, courts, and correspondence in India for over 700 years, with poets like Amir Khusrau Dehlavi and Bedil Dehlavi developing the Indian style of Persian poetry. Until the British colonization in 1832, Persian remained the dominant court language in Delhi and Agra, infusing thousands of words into Hindi and Urdu.
